VITAMIN C

What exactly is Vitamin C useful for our skin?
In short – Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that potentially helps to lighten dark spots, known as pigmentation, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, neutralize harmful free radicals detrimental to the skin, including environmental pollutants and ultraviolet radiation.

Angela Lamb MD advises before relying on the first product containing vitamin C, to be informed about some important characteristics regarding the properties of vitamin C.

Applied to the skin in the form of a serum or other cosmetic product, vitamin C has a wide range of protective and anti-aging effects. "Serums usually offer the highest concentrations of vitamin C and tend to penetrate the skin better compared to other products containing vitamin C such as creams or cleansing products," says Annie Chiu MD.

  • Vitamin C can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is because the antioxidant can help your skin produce collagen – the protein that makes our skin look tight and young, explains Annie Chiu MD.
  • Vitamin C successfully influences pigmentation spots. With constant use of vitamin C, the skin will have an even tone, reduce areas of pigmentation, and the skin will be more radiant and fresh. This is because vitamin C inhibits the overproduction of melanin (the substance in our body that causes pigmentation and skin color, eyes, hair).
  • Vitamin C will help protect the skin. Skin damage, which can be caused by environmental aggressors such as UV rays, pollution, as well as stress and improper regime, can be reduced with the use of vitamin C. It is an antioxidant and a strong ally in fighting skin-damaging factors, it also has anti-inflammatory functions and enhances wound healing and irritation.

Can Vitamin C be used for acne-prone skin?

People with acne can potentially benefit from using products containing vitamin C. A study in the Indian Journal of Dermatology from 2013 shows improvement in lesions in acne patients in 77% of cases. It also improves acne scars thanks to its ability to stimulate collagen production and lighten the complexion.

Regardless of its good effects, vitamin C should not be overused because it can irritate the skin, causing redness and peeling, especially in more sensitive and reactive skins. It is advisable to start with a gradual and moderate introduction of vitamin C into the daily routine. It is good to start with one application per day with 10% of vitamin C in the product formula.

What other ingredients should not be combined with Vitamin C?

Although vitamin C is generally safe for use in most circumstances, there are some ingredients to avoid combinations with. Since vitamin C is an acid, combining it with other acids such as salicylic, lactic, glycolic acid, etc., should be avoided. Mixing vitamin C with other acids at the same time can change the pH of the vitamin and make it ineffective – according to Dr. Chui.

For similar reasons, simultaneous use of benzoyl peroxide – well known in acne fighting – should be avoided. Benzoyl peroxide oxidizes vitamin C and makes it less effective – according to Dr. Chui. She recommends using benzoyl peroxide at night and vitamin C in the morning.

Is it safe to use Vitamin C with retinoids?

It can be used at different times of the day – products with vitamin C in the morning, and retinoids in the evening. Retinoids in general can make the skin photosensitive, so it is important for products containing retinol to be used in the evening and to avoid the summer season.

Can Vitamin C be used at night?

There is certainly no prohibition on using vitamin C at night, but its power when applied in the morning is much greater, as its antioxidant powers help protect the skin from UV rays, free radicals, and pollution. However, an important condition is for vitamin C to be well absorbed by the skin before being exposed to the sun, as its formula becomes unstable in bright sunlight.
